No to transgenic maize!

To the people of Mexico

To the peoples of the world

To the Mexican government

To the Convention on Biological Diversity / Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety

To the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations / FAO

The indigenous and peasant organizations and communities, environmental organizations, popular education organizations, base organizations, ecclesiastical communities, groups of producers, members of urban movements, scholars, scientists, and political analysts of the Network In Defense of Maize vigorously repudiate the planting of transgenic maize in Mexico. It is a historic crime against the peoples of maize, against biodiversity and food sovereignty, against ten thousand years of indigenous and peasant agriculture that bequeathed this seed for the wellbeing of all the peoples of the world.

We assert that the presidential decree of March 6, 2009, which allows the planting of transgenic maize, intentionally fails to consider that:

Mexico is the center of origin and diversity of maize. There are over 59 known races and thousands of varieties, which will be inevitably contaminated.

It is indigenous and peasant peoples who created and preserve this genetic treasure of maize, one of the main crops on which human and animal nourishment depends around the globe.

Maize is the basic food source for the Mexican population. There are no studies of what happens when a population eats large quantities. And in México the consumption of maize happens in large quantities. There are scientific studies which, at much smaller levels of consumption, report allergies and other negative impacts on the health of humans and animals fed with transgenic food.

The varieties of transgenic maize which are being proposed for planting in the country do not solve Mexico’s agricultural problems: They are more expensive, since the cost of seeds and licensing are greater than those associated with conventional crops; they do not have a greater rate of return: it is equal or less, unless there is a strong incidence of pests which are not common in Mexico; they require more pesticides since they constantly emit Bt toxins, which generate resistance and secondary pests that must be controlled with other pesticides.

These crops will damage biodiversity and the environment. Since Mexico is an extremely biodiverse country, no research undertaken in other environments is applicable because the variables and interconnections increase exponentially. Since maize is an open pollinated crop, avoiding transgenic contamination is impossible when cultivated in open fields. Contamination also occurs in warehouses, during transportation, and in industrial facilities.

Transgenic crops are useless for peasant or organic agriculture, but they will unavoidably contaminate native and criollo varieties of maize, while threatening organic production, which will lose its market niche.

All transgenic seeds are patented and are controlled by six multinational companies (Monsanto, Syngenta, DuPont, Dow, Bayer, BASF), which results in a complete dependence of peasants and farm workers on these multinationals and criminalizes the victims of contamination.

The native peoples of Mexico created maize and they have been the guardians and creators of the diversity of varieties currently in existence. Food sovereignty and the preservation of this diversity depend on the integrity of their rights. Because of that, transgenic contamination is an assault on the identity of Mesoamerican peoples  and is an act of aggression against ten thousand years of agriculture. The planting of transgenic maize is a frontal attack against native and peasant peoples and a violation of their rights.

For the peoples that constitute Mexico, maize is not merchandise, but the origin of a civilization and the foundation of the livelihood of peasant lives and economies.

We will not let our seeds be lost or contaminated by transgenes owned by transnational companies. We will not comply with unfair laws that criminalize seeds and peasant lifestyle. We will continue protecting maize and the life of our peoples.

We place responsibility for the loss and damage of Mexican maize on the  companies that produce transgenic seeds; on the legislative powers that approved the Law of Biosafety and Genetically Modified Organisms (“Monsanto Law”) for the benefit of corporations; on the Mexican government; on the secretaries of Agriculture, Environment and the Intersecretarial Commission on Biosafety and GMOs (CIBIOGEM), who are responsible for the final measures to eliminate all legal protections of maize.

For all of those reasons:

We repudiate the experimental or commercial cultivation of transgenic maize and demand that it be banned in Mexico.

We repudiate the “Monsanto Law” its bylaws, and any other mechanism to criminalize peasant seeds.

We repudiate government monitoring of peasant cornfields, because it is a pretext for eliminating even more peasant seeds.

We commit ourselves, and call on all indigenous and peasant communities and peoples to do the same: defend native seeds and continue planting, storing, exchanging, and distributing their own seeds, as well as exercising their right over their territories and preventing the cultivation of transgenic maize.

We call on the population to demand that all produce we consume on a daily basis is GMO-free.

We call on international agencies to condemn the government of Mexico for this violation of peasant ancestral rights, biodiversity, food sovereignty, and the precautionary principle in centers of origin of basic crops for world nourishment and economy.

Farmers should be allowed or encouraged to use their own non transgenic seed from their crops.

Restore seeds to their proper place in the natural order of things. A seed carries the story of its species: the memory of its ancestors, and the promise of its descendents. To artifically alter the memory and to intentionally erase the promise is a desecration. Corn seeds embody the two biological requirements for life: procreation and nourishment. Accordingly, seeds are sacred in my view. Any attempt to turn them into a marketable commodity is morally repugnant.

Corn is part of God Creation for all creatures, not for a few powerful one that want to control everything at expenses of God’s Creation.

Much like the extraordinary yields promised by suspect financial instruments created a worldwide economic collapse, the mindless pursuit for increased crop yields at some point will devastate our agricultural foundation. When the time comes to pay the price for the destruction of our food supply, as it becomes patently unsafe to eat, what would those now proud scientists tell their children’s grandchildren when they are born with neurological and immune system deficiencies and disorders? Would they say, "I’m sorry, we didn’t know?" Just because it can be done is not always a reason to do so. Count your money now, and hold it dear, for you are trading the well being of future generations in exchange. THINK.

If YOU do not want GM food don’t buy, grow and/or EAT ANY! If YOU do not want nano-tech and/or functional food do not buy, grow or EAT ANY! If you do not want pesticides/herbicides and best nutrition :

    Switch to organic food.

Leave the artificial junk in the shelves !!!! Very simple !

For the impact of GMO or nano-tech read carefully the studies from Hawaii. Argentina, India, Russia and elsewhere - get informed and organized into immediate action.

Bees have been vanished for about 20 years in China in some parts! and it is estimated they will be wiped out in North America in about 2030.

USE your brains before it sputters off also !

  • July 28, 2009 We have just made a petition on GMO-carnations with changed colour. Named Moonaqua TM. These carnations are not yet available in Europe because they are genetically engineered and are not autorized. But the Dutch Ministry of Environment will in 6 weeks. You can protest against this flower till than. To test on the safety they use mice and human embryotic cells and that for a change in colour. There are enough ordinairy flowers with beautiful colours on the globe, we don’t need artificial ones, I think. Sign my petition by sending an e-mail to this e-mail address: miep(a)miepbos.nl by stating: Petition on GMO-carnation Moonaqua ™ , C/NL/06/01 and your name street town country without commas. More about the GMO carnation you can read here and here (EFSA Summary) . Deadline 1rst of September 2009. All info: http://www.gentechvrij.nl/thegmofre...

      I agree Margalit.

Our group do GM Free Food people are trying to organize that right now too. We need concerted affirmitive action now. Our State of WA is under siege as our government is trying to ram through legislation to increase the area of GM crops grown in our State - against great opposition - we have till December to react.

If any organisations can help us too anywhere in the world we would be grateful. I’m going to a "Forum" on Tuesday supposedly giving an Iinsight into GM’ held by our Ag Dept - who is pro-GM. A 27,00 strong petition from opposers was delivered to our Minister who ignored it. Michelle

Loss of money is the only thing multinationals understand. Maybe you can send me your details as we will start organizing soon in the netherlands as many as possible consumers and organisations to Stop GMO in europe... it worked in 1999 it shoud work also now adays... with whishes for strength, margalit

I strongly support banning the transgenic maize in Mexico. I know that we don’t have such huge amount of logistic resources to fight the TNCs but I believe that if we- the advocates and practitioners of sustainable agriculture put our acts together and strongly campaign against this "Killer Technology" I’m sure we will win the fight. Our strength is in the small local communities of farmers, consumers and members of the civil society. Let’s continuously informed them about the benefits/advantages of going organic and the incompatibility of GMO in this sustainable practice. If the level of awareness of these people are raised on this issue, then nobody will patronize the GMO products of these mulit-national corporations thus greatly affecting their economic returns.

If Mexico decides to go GM-free, it will prosper, as many countries want to remain free of GM food. If it grows GM crops it wont be long before it goes bankrupt, not to mention the fact that the people of Mexico will be harming their health by consuming it. There is now plenty of research by independent scientists to prove this. More information at www.bangmfood.org

What must be understood is that for Monsanto, and the other biotech corporations, the agenda has been CONTAMINATION! This has already been accomplished in many places - not least Mexico. The evidence is in - many Mexican original corn varieties have been corrupted by genetically engineered constructs. What has been done by Monsanto and its associates should be regarded as the highest forms of national treason and criminality. In a just world, appropriate penalties should be applied - but this will not happen. Why? Because Monsanto works hand in glove with the US (and other) government. This should set alarm bells ringing around this planet! The whole world should see "The World According to Monsanto" - a French produced documentary that can leave no doubt - Monsanto must rank as one of the most evil corporations on the planet!

There are people here opposed to the use of certain words, and prefer niceties. Well, I am outraged by Monsanto. Nice is not an option. Genetically modified killer food. It is obscene that they do it to animals, let alone people. This company is attempting to take away rights that are given by God, by controlling what is grown in a garden. Not only that, genetic modification is another word for unsafe. Even the animals know it. Nice? Give me a break. The concern here is not the written word, it is the actions of Monsanto. I think you got this mixed up with a some type of class for a "Southern Belle". This company is making people sick and controlling their right to earn a living. You be real nice and talk real sweet, and maybe they’ll change their mind about their satanic greed. Sorry, you missed the point, COMPLETELY!
